Have you checked under your seat in church lately? There may be more hidden in the shadows than communion wafer crumbs. If you’re among the 30 million players of Pokémon Go, Pikachu may join you in church.
Pokémon Go uses a mobile phone’s mapping and camera technology to layer cartoon characters and graphics over the user’s real-life surroundings. Some churches see the game as a ministry opportunity and have invited players to use their facility and grounds. The Wardrobe Door gives some helpful tips to this end, such as using game features known as “lure modules” to attract Pokémon and offering players hospitality, refreshments, and giveaways.
Nevertheless, ministries should be aware of safety and liability risks. Gameplay has resulted in reports of mishaps resulting from distracted walking and driving. Some have even used the game to commit crimes, including sexual assault.
